THE MAPUTO PROTOCOL

| Appropriate Technology Centers |
| Background
Motivated by the concern for the elaboration of a programme for the promotion and use of appropriate technologies in favour of women to help reduce the duration and hardness of their labour, Government ordered a study in 1980, through which Cameroon was sub-divided in three ecological zones, namely: the soudano-sahelian zone, the forest zone and the mountain zone. .
Cameroon’s fifth five-year Development Plan (1981-1986) recommended Government to construct Appropriate technology Centers (ATCs) following identical technological zone.
In 1985, an option was taken to begin the implementation of the programme in the soudano-sahelian zone (Northern Regions).
By appealing to international cooperation, funding from the Canadian Agency for Development (ACDI) enabled the construction of the ATC of Maroua that was inaugurated in 1992.
In 2000, Appropriate Technology Centers were organised by Decree No. 2000/003/PM of 06 January 2000 on the organisation and functioning on Appropriate Technology Centers
