Background
- Their creation date as far back as 1969. Their appellation has undergone many changes.
- 1969 – 1977: Socio-domestic Centers created by CNU, the Single Party.
- 1977 – 1998: Women’s Houses.
- 1998 : Women's Empowerment and Family Centers.

| Missions assigned to WEFCs |
Women’s Empowerment and Family Centers have clients from diverse origin.
They welcome, without discrimination, adult women and young girls, individually or organised in associations, either in need of training, information, or having an expertise to offer. .
Men are admitted to educative talk and counselling sessions
With the assistance of the African Development Bank (ADB) and within the framework of the Programme to Improve Rural Families’ Income in the northern Regions, 12 WEFCs shall be constructed: 5 in Adamawa, 3 in the North and 4 in the Far-North. The construction of 8 WEFCs is programmed for 2004: 4 in Adamawa (Ngaoundere, Banyo, Meiganga, Tignere) 2 in the North (Guider and Tcholliré) 2 in the Far-North (Kousseri, Mora). |

The missions assigned to the Centers include:
- Moral, civic and intellectual training of women for their economic, social and cultural empowerment
- Women’s education on responsible parenthood and the protection of mother and child’s health.
- Support for entrepreneurship and the learning of promising trades, to ease women’s socio-professional integration or reintegration.
- Monitoring, in association with Appropriate Technology Centers, for the improvement of the living and working conditions of urban and rural women.
The assistance and training offered by WEFCs include subjects and lessons that are likely to contribute to the economic, cultural and social development of women.

Location of the WEFCs
The WEFCs are located in each Divisional Chief-town. However they can also be established in some Sub-Divisional Chief-towns. 30 are operational all over the national territory, 5 others are under construction. WEFCs are found in the following localities: |
